Politics, trade, science and technology, cultural exchange, and tourism were key areas of discussion
India and Bosnia and Herzegovina convened their 4th Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) in Sarajevo on Thursday (November 28, 2024) underscoring the growing depth of their bilateral relations. The meeting provided a comprehensive platform for both nations to review and strengthen their ties in various domains, including politics, trade, science and technology (S&T), cultural exchange, and tourism.

The discussions highlighted the progress achieved in political relations and economic collaboration. The delegations explored ways to expand trade and investment, focusing on untapped opportunities that could foster mutual economic growth. Science and technology cooperation, particularly in innovation and research, was also on the agenda.

Cultural exchange emerged as a key area of focus, with both sides emphasizing the need to enhance people-to-people connections through student and youth exchange programs and tourism promotion.

The Indian delegation was led by Arun Kumar Sahu, Additional Secretary (Central Europe) from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), while the Bosnian side was represented by Tarik Bukvic, Head of Department for Asia and Africa, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

“India and Bosnia and Herzegovina share a close and friendly bond that has grown stronger over the years. These consultations pave the way for deeper collaboration across multiple sectors,” Sahu noted.

The consultations also addressed significant regional and global issues of mutual concern. Both sides exchanged views on developments in their respective neighborhoods Discussions extended to multilateral platforms, including BRICS, the United Nations, the European Union, and the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM).

During his visit to Sarajevo, Sahu held meetings with senior officials, including Marko Milisav and Maja Gacic, advisors to the Chairwoman of the Presidency of Bosnia and Herzegovina. He also paid a courtesy visit to Christian Schmidt, the High Representative of Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Marking 30 Years of Diplomatic Relations
As both nations prepare to celebrate 30 years of diplomatic relations in 2025, this meeting took on special significance. The long-standing partnership, built on mutual respect and shared goals, reflects a history of warm and friendly relations.

India and Bosnia and Herzegovina’s cooperation spans multiple sectors, from trade and culture to education and innovation. The Indian diaspora in Bosnia also plays a vital role in strengthening people-to-people ties.

In a post on X, MEA Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared highlights from the consultations: “The 4th India-Bosnia & Herzegovina FOC, co-chaired by Mr Arun Sahu, Additional Secretary (Central Europe), and Mr Tarik Bukvic, Head of Department for Asia & Africa, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Bosnia & Herzegovina, was held in Sarajevo today. Both sides reviewed various aspects of bilateral relations, including political, economic, educational, cultural, and S&T cooperation. They also exchanged views on regional and global issues.”

The consultations concluded with both sides reaffirming their commitment to strengthening their multi-faceted partnership. It was agreed that the next round of Foreign Office Consultations will be held in New Delhi at a mutually convenient time.

As both nations prepare to commemorate three decades of diplomatic ties, the discussions held in Sarajevo signal a renewed focus on achieving shared goals and deepening cooperation.
