The visit of President Murmu to Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi provided necessary momentum to relationship between India and Africa
President Droupadi Murmu concluded her three-nation state visit to Algeria, Mauritania, and Malawi, creating a new chapter in the vibrant India-Africa relationship.
 
In Malawi, where she arrived on October 17 in the final leg of her three-nation visit, President Murmu met Dr Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera, the President of Malawi and held productive discussions on a wide range of issues to further deepen the India-Malawi relationship.
 
During her visit, President Murmu witnessed the signing of MoUs on arts & culture, youth matters, sports and pharmaceutical cooperation.
 
She also witnessed the symbolic handing over of 1000 MT of rice as humanitarian assistance from India to Malawi and the handing over of the Bhabhatron cancer treating machine to Malawi.  
 
She announced the Government of India’s support in setting up a permanent Artificial Limb Fitment Centre (Jaipur Foot) in Malawi.  
 
President Murmu also attended India-Malawi Business Roundtable where in his speech she expressed her happiness over growing bilateral trade between India and Malawi.

India is currently the fourth largest trading partner of Malawi. India is also one of the largest investors in Malawi with over 500 million US dollars worth of investments in various sectors.
 
In Mauritania, where she reached in the Morning of October 16 in the second leg of the three-nation visit, President Murmu had meetings this African country’s foreign Minister, Dr. Mohamed Salem Ould Merzoug, President Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani and held wide-ranging discussions on issues of bilateral importance.  
 
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, President Murmu, and her Mauritania counterpart Mohamed Ould Cheikh El Ghazouani also held delegation level talks, which were followed by the signing of four bilateral MoUs and agreements.
 
These were on cultural cooperation, exemption of visa for diplomats and service passport holders, on Foreign Office Consultations, and an MoU between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and the Diplomatic Academy of Mauritania.
 
India and Mauritania are celebrating the 62 years of the establishment of diplomatic relations between two countries. Mauritania is currently the Chair of the African Union and the first Chair after the African Union has become a member of the G20 during India's Presidency in September 2023.
 
Algeria was the first leg of President Murmu’s three-nation visit. This was the first ever visit by an Indian President to Algeria and a visit at the level of the Head of State and Head of Government from India to Algeria after nearly four decades, the MEA said.

The Ministry added, this was the first incoming visit of a Head of State or Head of Government after President Tebboune assumed office in his second term in Algeria.
 
Between India and Algeria, there have been regular political level interactions. Recently, External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met the Foreign Minister of Algeria at New York. The two countries enjoy significant economic and commercial cooperation.
 
India-Algeria trade touched around 3 billion in the year 2019 before the COVID pandemic struck. However, it is satisfactory that the trade has once again picked up and touched around 1.7 billion dollars last year. The visit of President Murmu to Algeria imparted necessary momentum to this relationship between the two countries.
