Modi conveys India's support for success of upcoming SCO Summit in Kazakhstan
India's Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kazakhstan's President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev reiterated their commitment to continue to work together to advance bilateral Strategic Partnership during a telephone conversation on Tuesday (June 25, 2024).
 
"Had a good conversation with President of Kazakhstan H.E. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev. Thanked him for warm wishes on the success in the elections. Reiterated the commitment to advance our Strategic Partnership with Kazakhstan. Conveyed India's full support for the success of the upcoming SCO Summit," Prime Minister Modi posted on X.
 
Prime Minister Modi conveyed India's full support for the success of the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Astana, and expressed confidence that Kazakhstan’s leadership would greatly contribute to the furtherance of regional cooperation, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
 
President Tokayev warmly congratulated the Prime Minister on the successful conduct of the largest democratic exercise in the world and his re-election for the historic third consecutive term. The Prime Minister thanked him for his warm felicitations, the MEA added.
 
Kazakhstan is set to host the 2024 SCO Summit in July this year.
 
India hosted the Summit of the SCO Heads of State in 2023 after taking over the rotating Presidency of the SCO at the 2022 Summit held in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.
 
India's association with the SCO began in 2005 as an Observer country. India became a full Member State of SCO at the 17th SCO Summit in Astana, Kazakhstan in June 2017, which was attended by Prime Minister Modi.
 
Relations between India and Kazakhstan are ancient and historical, going back to more than 2000 years. India was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Kazakhstan. Diplomatic relations were established on February 22, 1992. India and Kazakhstan bilateral relations were enhanced to strategic partnership in 2009.
 
President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev participated in the First India-Central Asia Summit in virtual format hosted by India on January 27, 2022; the event coincided with the 30th Anniversary of establishment of diplomatic relations between India and Central Asian nations.
