This year’s theme 'Yoga for Self and Society' highlights the dual role in fostering individual and societal well being
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to lead this year's International Day of Yoga celebrations on June 21 at the scenic Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) on the banks of Dal Lake in Srinagar, Jammu and Kashmir. This will be PM Modi's first visit to the region since assuming office for his third term, and it marks a significant event with an expected attendance of 3,000-4,000 people, including students, officials, and sports enthusiasts.
This year's theme, ‘Yoga for Self and Society,’ underscores yoga's dual role in enhancing individual well-being and fostering societal harmony. Union Minister of State for Ayush, Prataprao Jadhav, highlighted that Prime Minister Modi has written to each Gram Pradhan to encourage grassroots participation and spread yoga in rural areas, reflecting the government's commitment to promoting yoga across all segments of society.
The Srinagar administration, under the leadership of Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha, is leaving no stone unturned to ensure the event's success. Enhanced security measures have been put in place, with the Jammu and Kashmir Police declaring Srinagar a ‘temporary red zone’ and banning drone and quadcopter operations in the city until the event concludes.
Since the United Nations General Assembly declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga in 2014, following PM Modi's proposal, the day has grown in significance globally. PM Modi has been a pivotal figure in this movement, leading celebrations at various iconic locations, including Delhi's Kartavya Path, Chandigarh, Dehradun, Ranchi, Jabalpur, and the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
In the lead-up to this year’s event, PM Modi has been actively promoting yoga on social media, sharing tutorial videos of different asanas to spread awareness about yoga’s benefits. This initiative aligns with the theme of ‘Yoga for Self and Society,’ emphasizing the importance of yoga for both individual health and community well-being.
International Day of Yoga has set four Guinness World Records in the past decade. In 2015, 35,985 people performed yoga at Rajpath with PM Modi, and participation has grown steadily each year. In 2023, around 23.4 crore people worldwide took part in the event.
The Ayush Ministry has launched several initiatives to make yoga more accessible. These include a ‘Common Yoga Protocol Book in Braille’ to support visually impaired individuals and the ‘Professor Ayushman Comic Book’ to engage children. The ministry has also organized a ‘Yoga Tech Challenge’ to promote yoga-related technological innovations and startups.
This year, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will mark the occasion with a unique initiative, ‘Yoga for Space,’ where all scientists and officials will perform yoga together. The Ministry of Ayush has collaborated with various organizations, including the New Delhi Municipal Corporation (NDMC), Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), and Delhi Development Authority (DDA), to organize mass yoga events.
To engage the masses, the Ministry of Ayush, in partnership with the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), has launched the "Yoga with Family" video contest on the MyGov and MyBharat platforms. This contest encourages families worldwide to participate in the IDY 2024 celebrations, showcasing the joy of yoga and reinforcing family bonds.
There is tremendous enthusiasm about IDY 2024 in every village of Jammu and Kashmir. Last year, about 23 lakh people participated in this campaign, and 4,000 master trainers were available across the state. According to a post by public broadcaster DD News Srinagar on X, this widespread participation reflects the growing popularity and importance of yoga in the region.
Srinagar's picturesque setting on the banks of Dal Lake is poised to be a spectacular backdrop for the International Day of Yoga 2024. With robust preparations, high-level participation, and a theme that resonates deeply with the core values of yoga, this year's celebration promises to be a landmark event in promoting holistic health and societal harmony. The global recognition and participation in International Day of Yoga underscore the profound impact of yoga on individuals and communities, reinforcing India’s position as a leader in promoting global wellness and unity.
