New government likely to be sworn in on June 8
The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) led by Prime Minister Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has won a majority in the just-concluded Parliamentary elections, results for which were declared on Tuesday (June 4, 2024). While there has been no official announcement yet, the new government is likely to be sworn in on June 8, 2024, with Modi set to become Prime Minister for the third successive term.

Prime Minister Modi met President Droupadi Murmu on Wednesday (June 5, 2024) and tendered his resignation along with the Council of Ministers, the President's Secretariat said in a press release.
 
"The President has accepted the resignation and requested Shri Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers to continue till the new Government assumes office," the release added.

While PM Modi won from the Varanasi Lok Sabha (Parliamentary) constituency, the BJP has been declared victorious from 240 seats and the NDA's tally stands at 292. The opposition INDI Alliance has won 234 seats, with the Congress party winning in 99 Lok Sabha constituencies.
 
World Leaders Congratulate PM Modi on Victory
 
World leaders have congratulated PM Modi on winning a historic third term.
 
Italian Prime Minister Georgia Meloni said the two countries would continue to work together to strengthen their friendship.
 
"Congratulations to @narendramodi on the new election victory and my warmest wishes for good work. It's certain that we will continue to work together to strengthen the friendship that unites Italy and India and consolidate cooperation on the various issues that bind us, for the well-being of our nations and our people," Meloni wrote in a post on social media platform X, formerly Twitter. 

Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated PM Modi and expressed the hope that India and Israel would "continue to surge towards new heights".
 
"I extend my warmest congratulations to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on being re-elected for a third consecutive term.
May the friendship between India and Israel continue to surge towards new heights. Badhaai Ho!" PM Netanyahu tweeted.
 
Good Wishes Pour in from India’s Immediate Neighbourhood
 
Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe congratulated PM Modi and the BJP and said his country looks forward to strengthening the bilateral partnership.

"I extend my warmest felicitations to the @BJP4India led NDA on its victory, demonstrating the confidence of the Indian people in the progress and prosperity under the leadership of PM @narendramodi. As the closest neighbour Sri Lanka looks forward to further strengthening the partnership with India," he posted on X.
 
Bhutan Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay congratulated PM Modi and said he looked forward to working with him closely to further boost bilateral relations. 
 
"Congratulations to my friend PM @narendramodi ji and NDA for the historic 3rd consecutive win in the world’s biggest elections. As he continues to lead Bharat to great heights, I look forward to working closely with him to further strengthen the relations between our 2 countries," he wrote on X.
 
Nepali Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal 'Prachanda' also congratulated PM Modi for securing a third consecutive term.
 
"Congratulations to PM Narendra Modi on the electoral success of BJP and NDA in the Lok Sabha elections for the third consecutive term. We are happy to note the successful completion of the world's largest democratic exercise with the enthusiastic participation of the people of India," Prachanda posted on X.
 
Maldives President Mohamed Muizzu said he looked forward to "working together to advance our shared interests in pursuit of shared prosperity and stability for our two countries".
 
Historic Voter Turnout
 
 
The recently-concluded Lok Sabha polls recorded the highest voter turnout in the world. With an unprecedented 642 million voters participating in the elections, India set a global benchmark, highlighting the country’s democratic ethos and the enthusiasm of its electorate.
 
Addressing a press conference on Monday (June 3, 2024), Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar lauded the Indian voters, calling the elections “a miracle.” 
 
“We have created a world record of 642 million voters. This is a historic moment for all of us. This is 1.5 times the voters of all G7 countries and 2.5 times the voters of 27 countries in the European Union (EU). We thank each and every one who took part in this festival of democracy. The Indian elections are indeed a miracle having no parallel in the world," he pointed out.
 
The seven-phase elections, that stretched from April 19, 2024 to June 1, 2024, saw significant participation from various demographics, including an impressive turnout of 312 million women voters, surpassing the total number of women voters in the EU's most recent national elections.
