Two Indian peacekeepers lost their lives in the attack on Tuesday
Prime Minister Narendra Modi discussed the recent attack on UN mission personnel in Congo, in which two Indian peacekeepers were killed, with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Friday. He called for a quick investigation to bring the perpetrators of the incident to justice.
During the telephone conversation, both leaders discussed the recent attack on the UN Organization Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (MONUSCO), where two Indian peacekeepers were martyred, the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) said.
Tweeting about this, PM Modi wrote, "Spoke to UNSG @antonioguterres to discuss the shocking attack on the UN Peacekeeping Mission in Democratic Republic of Congo, in which 2 brave BSF personnel lost their lives. Urged quick investigations to bring the perpetrators to justice."
Prime Minister Modi underscored India’s abiding commitment to UN Peacekeeping, with more than 2,50,000 Indian peacekeepers having served under UN Peacekeeping Missions so far. He also pointed out that 177 Indian peacekeepers have made the supreme sacrifice while serving in UN peacekeeping Missions, the largest by any Troop Contributing Country.
UNSG Antonio Guterres offered his condolences to the families of the two deceased soldiers of the Indian Border Security Force who died in the recent attack, the government and the people of India. He reiterated his unequivocal condemnation of the attack against MONUSCO and assured all possible action in conducting speedy investigations, the PMO said.
During the call, Prime Minister Modi also reaffirmed India's unwavering commitment to promoting peace and stability in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where MONUSCO is now hosting over 2040 Indian soldiers.
