India and Guyana will move forward as “natural partners” in the energy sector, says PM Modi
Marking the first visit by an Indian Prime Minister to the Caribbean nation in 56 years, Prime Minister Narendra Modi has said that India will always be a trusted partner for Guyana in sectors like infrastructure, shipping, technology.
He met Guyana’s President Mohamed Irfaan Ali in Georgetown on Wednesday (November 20, 2024) for a review of development cooperation between the two nations which spans sectors like skill development, agriculture, education and energy.
“Had an excellent meeting with Dr. Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of Guyana. The President himself enjoys a strong bond with India. In our talks, we reviewed the developmental cooperation between our nations. This includes cooperation in sectors like skill development, capacity building, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, education and energy,” Prime Minister Modi said on social media platform X.
“India will always be a trusted partner for Guyana in sectors like infrastructure, shipping, technology and more. Guyana’s support for initiatives like the International Solar Alliance, CDRI and Global Biofuels Alliance are noteworthy,” Prime Minister Modi added.
In his press statement, Prime Minister Modi also said that India and Guyana would move forward as “natural partners” in the energy sector.
Prime Minister Modi and President Irfaan Ali witnessed the exchange of 10 Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) across diverse sectors ranging from digital payments to hydrocarbons and agriculture.
The MoUs include one on facilitating a payments system like the United Payments Interface (UPI) in Guyana and another on sharing of successful digital solutions. India and Guyana have also resolved to collaborate in sectors like agriculture and Hydrocarbons.
“These crucial MoUs will greatly benefit the people of India and Guyana!” Prime Minister Modi said on social media platform X.
While in Georgetown, Prime Minister Modi was conferred “The Order of Excellence of Guyana”- the country's highest National Honour- by President Irfaan Ali. He was honoured for his 'visionary statesmanship, for championing the rights of developing countries on the global stage, for exceptional service to the global community and for his commitment to strengthening India-Guyana relations.’
Prime Minister Modi, who is only the fourth foreign leader to be conferred with the highest National award of Guyana, dedicated it to the people of India and to the deep-rooted historical ties between the people of the two countries. He emphasized that his state visit was testament to India's continued commitment towards deepening India-Guyana friendship.
“Sincerely thank President Dr. Irfaan Ali, for conferring upon me Guyana's highest honour, 'The Order of Excellence.' This is a recognition of the 140 crore people of India,” he said on X.
Prime Minister Modi, who attended the India-CARICOM Summit, was also conferred Dominica's highest National Award, "Dominica Award of Honour", by President Sylvanie Burton for for his statesmanship, support to Dominica during the Covid 19 pandemic and his commitment to strengthening India and Dominica ties.
Prime Minister of Dominica Roosevelt Skerrit also graced the occasion. Guyana President Irfaan Ali, Barbados Prime Minister of Barbados Mia Amor Mottley, Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell, Saint Lucia Prime Minister Philip J Pierre, and Antigua and Barbuda Prime Minister Gaston Browne also witnessed the award ceremony.
