The stage appears to be set for further intensification in bilateral relations between India and the Philippines
The growing intensity in bilateral ties between India and the Philippines was aptly highlighted by the release of a joint logo earlier this week. The logo commemorates the completion of 75 years of establishment of diplomatic relations between the two nations.
It was unveiled by External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar and Ambassador of the Republic of the Philippines to India Josel F Ignacio, in the presence of Undersecretary (Vice-Minister) of Tourism of the Republic of the Philippines Maria Rica C. Bueno, in New Delhi November 13, 2024.
The joint logo incorporates elements from the Indian and the Philippine national flags, including the Ashok Chakra and the Sun and also features national birds of both countries – the Peacock and the Eagle. The placement of these elements symbolizes the enduring friendship, cultural bonds and shared values between the two countries, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.
The 75th anniversary celebrations coincide with the completion of a decade of India’s Act East Policy. Several special commemorative events and activities are being planned to foster greater cooperation, including under the ASEAN Framework, between India and the Philippines.
Incidentally, the Philippines is the new country coordinator for India within the ASEAN, having taken over the role from Singapore at the 21st ASEAN-India Summit held in Vientiane, Laos in October this year.
Visiting Manila in March this year, EAM Jaishankar noted that India’s ties with the Philippines had seen “very perceptible growth” in recent times across sectors like trade and investment, health, food security, education, science and technology, defence and maritime cooperation.
The growing pace of bilateral trade is particularly noteworthy, having crossed the level of USD 3 billion in 2022-23. At the 5th meeting of the Joint Commission on Bilateral Cooperation (JCBC) held in New Delhi on June 29, 2023, both sides agreed to commence negotiations on a bilateral Preferential Trade Agreement.
When India launched the Look East Policy and intensified partnership with ASEAN in 1992, this also resulted in stronger relations with countries in the region including the Philippines, both bilaterally and in the regional context. With the Act East Policy initiated in 2014, the relationship with the Philippines has diversified further into political-security; trade and industry and people-to-people realms.
According to the MEA, coupled with the current development trajectory in the Philippines, the stage appears to be set for further intensification in bilateral relations, covering a broad canvas of consultations and cooperation on matters related to foreign policy, security, defence, trade, finance, tourism, health, agriculture, people-to-people relations and culture.
