This initiative is part of a broader strategy to empower grassroots democracy
In a historic move to recognise and empower grassroots democracy, the Government of India has extended a special invitation to approximately 400 Elected Women Representatives (EWRs) and Elected Representatives (ERs) of Panchayati Raj Institutions (PRIs) to participate as distinguished guests in the 78th Independence Day celebrations at the iconic Red Fort in Delhi on August 15, 2024.
This initiative, underscored by its commitment to strengthening local governance and amplifying the voices of rural leaders, marks a significant milestone in the nation’s ongoing journey towards inclusive development.
The selected representatives, who hail from various Panchayats across the country, will have the honour of witnessing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s address to the nation from the historic ramparts of the Red Fort. This year, Prime Minister Modi will address the nation for the 11th consecutive time, becoming the first leader after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru to achieve this remarkable feat.
The inclusion of these Panchayat leaders in the celebrations aligns with the Prime Minister’s vision of a "Viksit Bharat" (Developed India) and underscores the crucial role that grassroots governance plays in achieving localized sustainable development goals (LSDGs).
The Government’s invitation to the EWRs and ERs is not merely symbolic but is part of a broader strategy to empower grassroots democracy by recognizing the pivotal role that Panchayati Raj Institutions play in the governance and development of rural India.
These institutions, which serve as the backbone of local self-governance, are instrumental in ensuring that the benefits of government schemes and initiatives reach the remotest corners of the country. By bringing these leaders to the forefront of national celebrations, the Government is sending a powerful message about the importance of local governance in the nation’s development narrative.
The visit of Panchayat representatives to the national capital has been designed as a comprehensive and enriching experience.
They will be felicitated during a special ceremony on August 14, 2024; the representatives will also visit the Pradhan Mantri Sangrahalaya (PM Museum), which offers insights into India’s democratic journey and the contributions of both incumbent and former Prime Ministers. This visit is intended to provide the representatives with a broader perspective on India’s leadership legacy and to inspire them to contribute more actively to their communities.
The initiative is expected to catalyse transformative change at the Panchayat level, inspiring other Panchayats across India to take a more active role in achieving LSDGs. By bringing these grassroots leaders to the forefront of the nation’s most significant celebration, the Government is reinforcing its dedication to inclusive growth and women’s empowerment in rural India.
As the nation celebrates its 78th Independence Day, the participation of Panchayat leaders in the festivities is a powerful reminder of the crucial role that local governance plays in India’s democratic fabric. The presence of these grassroots leaders at Red Fort on August 15, 2024, will serve as a powerful symbol of the Government’s commitment to fostering inclusive growth, women’s empowerment, and a brighter future for all citizens.
