The GyalSung Project is designed to empower Bhutanese youth through comprehensive skill development

Keeping up the momentum when it comes to its steadfast support to the bilateral development partnership, India has handed over the second tranche of five billion Indian Rupees (INR) or Ngultrum (Nu) to Bhutan as financial assistance for the GyalSung Project.

The amount was presented by India’s Ambassador Sudhakar Dalela to Bhutan's Minister of Foreign Affairs and External Trade Lyonpo DN Dhungyel on Tuesday (March 26, 2024).

The GyalSung Project, an emblematic venture endorsed by the King of Bhutan, is designed to empower Bhutanese youth through comprehensive skill development. By promoting active participation in the nation's development, the project aims to prepare a new generation of citizens equipped with the knowledge and competencies necessary for the future.

This second instalment brings India's total contribution to 10 billion INR/Nu under the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in January 2024. The MoU stipulates the provision of 15 billion INR/Nu in concessionary financing from India for the infrastructure development related to the GyalSung academies.

This financing arrangement is in addition to the Government of India’s Plan Assistance to the Royal Government of Bhutan, the Indian Embassy said.

The MoU builds on the earlier collaboration between the Government of India and GyalSung. In February 2023, India extended a grant assistance of INR/Nu 2 billion for the DeSuung for GyalSung programme.

“India is privileged to partner with Bhutan on a landmark initiative of His Majesty the King of Bhutan, which puts the youth and skilling at the heart of nation-building endeavours,” the Indian Embassy said.

Through initiatives like the GyalSung Project, India and Bhutan continue to strengthen their bilateral relations, cultivating a future where the youth play a pivotal role in shaping the destiny of their nations.
