India calls for action-oriented approach to address the challenges that disproportionately impact the Global South
In an influential assembly of the world's diplomatic leaders, the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting convened in Rio de Janeiro on February 21-22, 2024, under Brazil's G20 Presidency. Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs V Muraleedharan represented India, highlighting the commitment to addressing the needs of the Global South and advocating for significant global governance reforms.
Hosted by Brazil's Minister of Foreign Affairs Mauro Vieira, the gathering brought together foreign ministers and heads of delegations from G20 members, invited countries, and international organizations. This conclave reflected a concerted effort to tackle the myriad of challenges facing today's global community.
MoS Muraleedharan praised Brazil's leadership and highlighted the sequential G20 presidencies of four developing nations—Indonesia, India, Brazil, and South Africa—illustrating a paradigm shift towards more inclusive global governance. He also celebrated the African Union's (AU) new role as a permanent member of the G20, marking a milestone in the representation of African perspectives within global economic discussions.
Focusing on "G20’s role in dealing with ongoing international tensions," the Indian minister advocated for a comprehensive and action-oriented approach to address the myriad challenges that disproportionately impact the Global South. He called upon the G20 members to continue the momentum gained from the consensus achieved in the G20 New Delhi Leaders’ Declaration (NDLD), particularly in areas related to development and the acceleration of agreed decisions and outcomes.
In a session dedicated to "Global Governance Reform," MoS Muraleedharan emphasized the necessity for a fundamental overhaul of the existing multilateral governance framework to better align with the realities of the 21st century. He championed the call for reformed Multilateral Development Banks (MDBs) and a transparent, results-oriented process for United Nations reforms, including those of the Security Council. The minister underscored the pivotal role of trade and investment as catalysts for growth and prosperity for all nations.
MoS Muraleedharan's engagements included participation in an official dinner and a farewell lunch, hosted by Brazil's Foreign Minister and the Mayor of Rio, respectively. These occasions provided valuable opportunities for bilateral dialogue, notably with Uruguay's Foreign Minister, Eng. Omar Paganini, and facilitated engagement with the Indian diaspora in Rio, highlighting the multifaceted aspects of India's diplomatic outreach.
Additionally, the Minister's involvement in the India-Brazil-South Africa (IBSA) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting further solidified the importance of IBSA solidarity and the pursuit of enhanced cooperation across shared interests.
MoS Muraleedharan shared reflections on the meetings social media platform X, reaffirming India's call for dialogue and diplomacy in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict and advocating for a two-state solution to the Israel-Hamas war. His commentary aligned with Brazil's G20 Presidency theme, "Building a Just World and a Sustainable Planet," resonating with India's vision of global harmony and collaboration.
This year's G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting, the 10th of its kind since 2012, has significantly evolved as a premier forum for discussing international economic policy and shared global challenges. With Brazil introducing new working groups and engagement groups, including initiatives for women's empowerment and judicial collaboration, the meeting underlining a collective commitment to addressing global disparities and fostering a more equitable and sustainable future.
The outcomes of the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Rio de Janeiro signal a hopeful path towards not only addressing the immediate needs of the Global South but also paving the way for substantial reforms in global governance, reflecting a shared ambition for a more inclusive and prosperous world.
