India and Kenya are looking at greater coordination in the maritime domain
Deputy Chief of the Naval Staff (DCNS) Vice Admiral Sanjay Mahindru is on a three-day official visit to Kenya from June 21 to June 23, with the aim of bolstering bilateral defense relations between the two nations.
The visit coincides with the presence of Indian Naval Ship Sunayna in Mombasa as part of the 'Ocean Ring of Yoga' initiative organized by the Government of India to commemorate the 9th International Day of Yoga on June 21, 2023.
During his visit, Vice Admiral Mahindru has held several significant meetings, including a courtesy call on Cabinet Secretary of the Ministry of Defense Aden Bare Duale. The meeting highlighted the historical ties between Kenya and India as maritime neighbors, emphasizing the importance of deepening bilateral defense cooperation.
During the meeting, the officials discussed various avenues to strengthen their ties further, with a focus on coordinated operations in the maritime domain and enhancing interoperability between the Indian Navy and the Kenya Navy.
Furthermore, Vice Admiral Mahindru also met with Chief of Defense Forces of the Kenyan Defence Forces (KDF) General Francis O Ogolla. Their discussions centered around enhancing joint operations and cooperation in maintaining peace, stability, and good order in the region.
Both naval leaders emphasized the need to collaborate and address common maritime challenges effectively.
In another significant engagement, Vice Admiral Mahindru interacted with members of the Global Center for Policy and Strategy (GLOCEPS) in Nairobi. This exchange provided an opportunity to exchange views and insights on policy matters related to defense and security.
Later on, as part of his visit, Vice Admiral Mahindru is scheduled to visit the Mtongwe Naval Base in Mombasa and hold discussions with the Commander of the Kenya Navy at the Kenya Navy Headquarters (KNHQ).
During his visit, he will oversee the Harbor Phase activities of the ongoing Maritime Partnership Exercise (MPX) between the Indian and Kenyan navies. Additionally, Vice Admiral Mahindru will interact with the crew of INS Sunayna, further strengthening the camaraderie between the two naval forces.
