The government has focused on incorporating start-ups and MSMEs into the defence supply chain
Defence production in India has achieved a significant milestone as the value for the Financial Year (FY) 2022–23 has surpassed Rs 1 lakh crore for the first time ever.
Relentless efforts have propelled the value to reach Rs 1,06,800 crore, with further contributions anticipated from the remaining private defence industries. In comparison to the last fiscal year, which had a value of Rs 95,000 crore, this represents an impressive gain of more than 12%, the Ministry of Defence said on Friday (May 19, 2023).
The ministry noted that the government has consistently addressed issues and promoted a favorable environment for defence manufacturing in the nation while working closely with the defence industry and its associations. Important regulatory changes have been made to make doing business easier, with a focus on incorporating start-ups and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) into the defence supply chain.
As a consequence of these concentrated efforts, industries, especially MSMEs and start-ups, actively participate in the design, development, and production of defence products. During the previous 7-8 years, the government has seen a tremendous increase in the granting of defence licenses to enterprises by approximately 200%. Such actions have given the nation's defense industrial manufacturing ecosystem a significant boost, creating a large number of job possibilities.
The remarkable milestone in defence production underscores the country's commitment to self-reliance and indigenization in the defense sector, in line with the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat (Self-Reliant India). India has advanced toward reaching self-sufficiency in defence manufacturing because of the government's constant support and facilitation of the defence sector, as well as the industry's excitement and desire to participate.
