PM Modi will participate in the G-7 Summit and the Quad Leaders' Summit
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is set to embark on a significant international tour this week. He will be visiting Japan, Papua New Guinea, and Australia to attend the G-7 Summit, the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation Summit, and the Quad Leaders' Summit respectively.
According to the programme released by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Tuesday (May 16, 2023), PM Modi will visit Hiroshima, Japan, from May 19 to 21 at the invitation of Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and attend the G-7 Summit while there.
During the Summit, which is being held under the Japanese presidency, PM Modi will address sessions of the G-7 with partner countries on issues like peace, stability, and prosperity on a sustainable planet; food, fertilizer, and energy security; health; gender equality; climate change and the environment; resilient infrastructure; and development cooperation.
On the sidelines of the summit, he will also meet bilaterally with Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and conduct bilateral discussions with some of the other participating leaders.
After Japan, PM Modi will head to Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. Notably, this will mark the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Papua New Guinea. While there, he will co-host the third summit of the Forum for India-Pacific Islands Cooperation (FIPIC III Summit) alongside Prime Minister of Papua New Guinea James Marape on May 22, 2023.
For the uninitiated, India and 14 Pacific Island Countries (PICs), including Fiji, Papua New Guinea, Tonga, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Samoa, Vanuatu, Niue, the Federated States of Micronesia, the Republic of Marshall Islands, the Cook Islands, Palau, Nauru, and the Solomon Islands, are a part of the FIPIC initiative, which was launched in 2014.
Later, PM Modi will participate in bilateral discussions with Prime Minister Marape and Governor-General Bob Dadae.
PM Modi will start the last leg of his international visit by traveling to Sydney, Australia, from May 22–24, 2023, at the invitation of Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
While there, he will take part in the Quad Leaders' Summit with US President Joe Biden, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese.
"The Summit provides an opportunity for the Leaders to exchange views about developments in the Indo-Pacific region and advance their vision for a free, open and inclusive Indo-Pacific," the MEA said.
On May 23, 2023, PM Modi will speak to the Indian diaspora and interact with Australian CEOs and business leaders as a part of his visit to Sydney. Later, on May 24, 2023, Prime Minister Modi will also meet with Prime Minister Albanese bilaterally.
