Tim Cook opened the first Apple Stores in India, at Mumbai and Delhi
Meeting Apple CEO Tim Cook in New Delhi on Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted what he described as "the tech-powered transformations taking place in India".
Cook called on Prime Minister Modi during his India visit to open the first two Apple Stores in the country, in Mumbai and Delhi.
Taking to Twitter, Apple CEO Cook wrote, “Thank you Prime Minister @narendramodi for the warm welcome. We share your vision of the positive impact technology can make on India’s future — from education and developers to manufacturing and the environment, we’re committed to growing and investing across the country.”
PM Modi also responded to the tweet, writing, “An absolute delight to meet you, @tim_cook! Glad to exchange views on diverse topics and highlight the tech-powered transformations taking place in India.”
Union Minister for Railways, Communications, Electronics & Information Technology Ashwini Vaishnaw also met with Cook. Their discussions centred around deepening Apple's engagement in India in the areas of manufacturing, electronics exports, skill development and job creation. They also talked about establishing a long-term association.
"Met with @tim_cook, CEO, Apple. Discussed deepening Apple’s engagement in India across manufacturing, electronics exports,
app economy, skilling, sustainability and job creation especially for women. Jointly charting a long-term and strong relationship," Vaishnaw tweeted.
Subsequently, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union Minister of State for Entrepreneurship, Skill Development, Electronics & Technology, met with Cook and his team to explore how to collaborate on Apple's strategic and long-term collaboration in India's digital transformation. Together with these topics, both sides also touched on strengthening and expanding manufacturing and exports in addition to skill development and job creation.
"It was a delight to meet @tim_cook CEO, @Apple and his team to engage on Apple’s strategic and long-term partnership with and in India’s digital journey. We discussed deepening and broadening manufacturing, exports, skilling of youth, expanding app n innovation economy and job creation," Chandrasekhar wrote on Twitter.
In what was a much-anticipated event, Cook launched the first Apple Store in the country in Mumbai's Bandra-Kurla Complex (BKC) on Tuesday. On Thursday, he opened the second Apple Store in India at an upscale mall in Delhi's Saket's locality.
