Jagdeep Dhankar will succeed M Venkaiah Naidu whose term ends on August 10


Jagdeep Dhankar has been elected as the 14th Vice-President of India. The ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA) candidate received secured 528 votes against Opposition candidate Margaret Alva's 182.

Voting as well as counting of votes was conducted on Saturday. Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar & Election Commissioner Anup Chandra Pandey jointly signed the official ‘Certification of Election' on Sunday, after the Election Commission of India (ECI) received the Return of Election & a Declaration of Result of election from the Returning Officer.

Of the 780 electors comprising elected and nominated members of the Rajya Sabha and elected members of the Lok Sabha, 725 cast their votes. Fifteen of these votes were later found to be invalid.

Dhankar, who was Governor of West Bengal before the NDA chose him as its Vice-Presidential candidate, will succeed M Venkaiah Naidu whose term ends on August 10.

He is the second leader from Rajasthan after Bhairon Singh Shekhawat to get elected the Vice-President of India. Shekhawat held the office from August 2002 to July 2007.

President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Dhankar on his election.

"Congratulations to Jagdeep Dhankhar on being elected the Vice President of India. The nation will benefit from your long and rich experience of public life. My best wishes for a productive and successful tenure," President Murmu said in a tweet.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi described Dhankar as a "Kisan Putra" and expressed confidence that he would a "outstanding Vice President".

"Congratulations to Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji on being elected India’s Vice President with resounding support across party lines. I am confident he will be an outstanding Vice President. Our nation will gain tremendously from his intellect and wisdom," PM Modi tweeted on Saturday evening.

"I thank all those MPs who have voted for Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar Ji. At a time when India marks Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav, we are proud to be having a Kisan Putra Vice President who has excellent legal knowledge and intellectual prowess," he said in another tweet.

Opposition Vice President candidate Alva and Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi were also among those who congratulated Dhankar on his win.
