Thousands of Indian students had to flee amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict
India is in talks with the neighboring countries of Ukraine to accommodate Indian medical students who were forced to leave the war-torn country, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Monday.
Apart from the efforts being made in the country by concerned department to help these medical students, the External Affairs Ministry is also in talks with Ukraine's neighbouring countries to find out if such students can be admitted in their universities, Jaishankar said while interacting with the media during a visit to Ahmedabad, Gujarat.
EAM Jaishankar informed that the Hungarian government had assured that they would admit as many Indian students as possible.
Thousands of students had to flee Ukraine, particularly from universities in the eastern cities of Kharkiv and Sumy, after Russia launched what it called a special military operation on February 24. They were brought back to India by the Indian Government after they crossed over to countries to Ukraine's west.
"Recently, the Hungarian Foreign Minister was in India and he told me nearly 1,250 Indian students have applied for admission in universities in his country. He assured us Hungary will try to accommodate as many students as possible," Jaishankar was quoted as saying.
"A warm and insightful discussion with FM Péter Szijjártó of Hungary today.
Appreciated Hungarian support for Operation Ganga and discussed admission of Indian medical students in Hungary.
Recalled Hungary’s early recognition of Covaxin and openness to travel arrangements," Jaishankar had tweeted after meeting his Hungarian counterpart on Friday.
