India and Argentina cooperate in a number of multilateral and international fora---from the United Nations to G20 and WTO

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday held talks with his counterparts from Argentina Santiago Andrés Cafiero through video conferencing and reviewed bilateral ties between the two countries

Writing about it on his twitter handle, EAM Jaishankar maintained: “A virtual review of our ties with FM @SantiagoCafiero of Argentina. Noted our expanding cooperation, including incommerce. Discussed Covid challenges, pharma trade, mining, defence, nuclear and space issues. Our coordination in multilateral forums has been long standing.”

India and Argentina enjoy warm and friendly relations.

On November 24, 2021, the two countries held the 6th round of Foreign Office Consultations with Secretary (East) in the Ministry of External Affairs Riva Ganguly Das representing India, while Argentina being represented by Deputy Foreign Minister Pablo Tettamanti.

During the FOC, while reviewing the multi-faceted relations between the two countries which were elevated to Strategic Partnership in 2019, both sides reaffirmed their resolve to broaden ongoing bilateral cooperation across a host of areas of mutual interest including Defence, Space, Nuclear Energy, Minerals, Energy (conventional and renewable), Oil & Gas (conventional as well as shale), Health and Pharma, Agriculture, Ayurveda, Development Cooperation, Science & Technology.

The two sides identified steps to strengthen trade and investment, market access for more agricultural as well as pharmaceuticals products, cooperation in Information Technology sector and deepening people-to-people ties, the MEA had said in a statement.

Both countries recalled their mutual assistance during COVID and reiterated their joint resolve to continue mutual cooperation in their fight against the pandemic and post-pandemic recovery, the MEA had maintained.

Both sides exchanged views on various regional and global issues and decided to strengthen the existing coordination in multilateral fora.

In the last ten years, India and Argentina have witnessed bilateral trade more than doubling to over $ 3 billion.

In his remarks at the ‘India and Argentina in the New World Order’ on November 6, 2021, EAM Jaishankar said though the two countries are taken several initiatives to bolster economic engagement between them, yet “there remains unexplored complementarities and untapped potential for increasing engagement in agriculture, mining and minerals, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and auto motives.”

India and Argentina share values and common interests on global issues ranging from terrorism, climate change, sustainable development, non-aligned movement, women’s issues, human rights, and non-proliferation.
