Nepal Army Chief Prabhu Ram Sharma is on a four-day visit to India

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Thursday received Chief of Army Staff of Nepal General Prabhu Ram Sharma, stating that the visit underlined the closeness of India-Nepal relationship.

Taking to twitter, Jaishankar said, “Pleased to receive General Prabhu Ram Sharma, Chief of Army Staff, Nepali Army. His visit underlines the closeness of our relationship.”

On Wednesday, President Ram Nath Kovind, conferred the honorary rank of General of the Indian Army on General Prabhu Ram Sharma at a special Investiture Ceremony held at Rashtrapati Bhavan. The Nepali Army Chief is a Graduate of National Defence College of India.

Earlier, the visiting Chief of Nepali Army met with India’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Bipin Rawat and discussed ways to strengthen the bilateral defence cooperation between the two countries.

On Tuesday, General Prabhu Ram Sharma arrived in New Delhi on a four-day visit to India on an invitation extended by Indian Army Chief, General MM Naravane with whom he exchanged views on boosting bilateral defence cooperation during a meeting.

Sunita Sharma, General Sharma’s spouse and the chairperson of the Nepali Army Wives Association (NAWA), is accompanying him.

General Sharma assumed command of the Nepali Army as the Chief of Army Staff on September 9 this year. He had been commissioned in the Nepali Army in March 1984 and has an illustrious career of over 39 years in diverse and dignified roles.

Since 1950, India and Nepal have been awarding each other’s Army Chief with the honorary rank of General in recognition of the mutual harmonious relationship between the two armies.
