India's active COVID-19 cases dropped to 8,635 on Tuesday, the lowest figure in eight months after a high of 95,735 on September 10, 2020.

According to data released by the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, India’s average daily new cases have also shown a clear downward trend in the last five weeks.

While it was 18,934 in the December 30, 2020-January 5, 2021 period, the average daily new cases reduced to 12,772 during the week January 27, 2021– February 2.

The country has also reported less than 100 daily deaths in the last 24 hours, the lowest in eight-and-a-half months. On May 15 last year, 100 deaths were recorded across the country.

The average daily deaths in the last five weeks also show a similar downward slide, from 242 in the December 30, 2020 – January 5, 2021 period to 128 during the week January 27, 2021-February 2, 2021.

The ministry pointed out that the country’s active COVID-19 caseload shrunk further to 1.63 lakh (1,63,353) this morning. The current active caseload now consists of just 1.52% of India’s Total Positive Cases.

Meanwhile, India continues to report a high recovery rate. It stood at 97.05 per cent, with the cumulative recoveries touching1.04 crore (1,04,48,406) today.

On the vaccination front, nearly 40 lakh (4 million) beneficiaries have received their shots. The figure stood at 39.50 lakh (39,50,156), or 3.95 million, beneficiaries being covered in 72,731 sessions till 8 am today.

During the last 24 hours, 1,91,313 healthcare workers were vaccinated across 3,516 sessions.
